An innovative idea would be a weird idea if it cannot be developed further into a product. The development of a great product starts with a simple prototype. The product prototype basic course can help students to master the basic skills and concepts of designing electronic products. With the mechanical drafting course of 2D and 3D design, electronic technology, and general micro-controller (PPB01 / PPB02 / PPB03) as the foundations. They are independent and interrelated. Choose an appropriate entry-stage based on the skill set you already have.
The basics of electronic technology help students understand analog and digital circuits, and can help create basic circuits from scratch. We will use Arduino as an example to explain all the necessary peripheral circuits of the micro-controller, such as power supply and clock circuit. We will also introduce the design of various sensor circuits. The study of digital circuits can help students build an understanding of logic circuits, and try to use various basic logic-gate circuits to implement digital operations to understand the principles of computer technology. All learning is based on design software and simulators. Students can quickly develop various designs without costly hardware and can observe the results intuitively.
Generally speaking, prototype design is the early stage of a product which includes appearance, structure and basic functions. When designing appearance and structure, we need to use 2D and 3D design tools. AutoCAD is known as the mother of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. This 2D design software is widely used in civil (Construction), mechanical (Machine design), and electrical (Circuit design)industries. Students learn to use AutoCAD to understand the basic terms and operations of design. We use another popular professional design software: Fusion 360, to learn 3D design. Accurate measurement is very important in mechanical design. Students use a precise measuring tool (Vernier caliper) to measure an actual object and accurately draw its 3D modeling 1:1 scale, which will help students to give attention to even tiny details of a product in the design process.
The universal micro-controller The universal micro-controller contains an ALU (Arithmetic and Logic Unit), memory, input and output ports required by the control system. As long as a simple power supply and clock are added, various input and output devices can be connected to realize automatic control functions. Most suitable for designing product prototypes. Students should learn the concept and principle of the micro-controller and understand the main performance parameters of the micro-controller. Comparing popular micro-controllers to master how to choose the appropriate hardware when designing prototypes. Use different micro-controllers to complete the design and implementation of several functional prototypes, and finally master the use of micro-controllers. At this stage, students will be exposed to physical electronic tools and components to bring their own innovative idea into a functional prototype.
